Dear Billm,
There will be no new road construction on the East Gate Road this year. There is one more section Indian Pond to Fishing Bridge Junction - yet to be scheduled. However, there may be road repairing occuring, but it is highly unlikely as the crats take years to move on something. There is lots of guardrail damage from the pa ss to the gate due to falling rocks and trees and the NO-IT-ALL-CAN-DO-NO-WRONG NPS staff who drove the snow removal equipment into the gaurd rail at some spots.
Years ago (1997), at Cub Creek Curve, the genius rotary plow operator drove over the TOP of the BRAND NEW guardrail, damaging it severly, and compromising the integrity of the gaurdrail. It sat there for years until Jersey wall cement barriers were installed as a band-aid patch. Years later, the guardrail was finally replaced.
This year, the construction du joir is on the South Gate road to widen it for all those Jackson bicyclists.
Funny how the roads that are closed more of the year than they are open are the ones that get widened, straightened, and flattened. Such roads are; the East Gate road, South Gate road, Artist point spur road, US 212 across Coulter Pa ss.
One can only wonder when the Lamar Road will be ripped up replete with 8am to 8pm travel; half-hour delays; dust dust dust, four or five sections lasting for ten years; oh, and no stopping zones. oooPS, there are already no stopping zones in Lamar.
