Our morning started out with a grizzly in Soda Butte. It was a good way to enjoy our coffee. At the Slough den site We watched the female wolf leave the den and leave one of the yearlings to babysit. As the babysitter took over, one of the pups ventured out of the den, and began climbing all over the babysitter. SO cute!!! That's when the action started, one black wolf joined up with several other wolves in the flats below the den site. And just out of our sites took down a elk cow in the river. One of the wolves ran off with an unborn calf in it's mouth, not sharing it's gourmet morsel with anyone else. Then 2 wolves, that weren't involved in the kill began howling from the opposite side of the flats. It became a challenge as to where to point the scope, not knowing what might be missed. After all the excitement calmed we headed into the Lamar. There was more excitement as some wolves dug out a coyote den, killing all the pups. The poor coyote came back after being chased, only to find it's family gone. We found out that this was the 2nd den that the wolves had destroyed that week. Just ouside of mammoth, inside the park, the elk finally made an appearance, tons of elk, everywhere. I guess the weather just had to warm up a bit. It was as if someone brought in a giant truck of elk and dropped them off. On our way back to the hotel we watched a black bear for a bit. But the real interesting thing was when I spotted a black wolf with what looked to be a puppy in it's mouth. Whether it was one of it's own or a coyote pup it had killed I don't know. It happened very fast, as it loped through the snow and into the trees just outside of round prarie. Today was a fantastic day!
