On our way to Yellowstone we saw many elk and deer in the fields and pastures just outside of Livingston. The mountains in the distance told the story of why....ALOT of snow still. We arrived mid-day in Yellowstone to snow falling. The locals told us that it had been a long hard winter...9 months of winter. And that there had been alot of winter kill with in the elk and bison herds. Viewing was at a minimum due to the weather. We did manage to watch a grizzly on a kill that was just off of wrecker pullout. The bighorn sheep were gathered at the Yellostone picnic area, enjoying the shelter of a tree. As we traveled into the Lamar Valley it was eerie...the emptiness. Usually full of life, it only had a lone coyote and a very few bison in it. This trip certainly started off different than past years.
