Just be sure to carry out all the leavings (apple cores, etc) and wrappings. I've never heard of a bear attacking to get at food in someone's back pack. Most hiker-bear encounters appear to be related to mothers "protecting" cubs, or any bear that finds itself surprised. So, carry bear spray and know how to use it, and make noise in dense brush or wherever sight-lines are not straight (that is, around blind corners in the trail, etc.) Don't bother with bear bells, they're not loud enough. Carry a whistle or a bicycle horn - both are obnoxious, I know, but their sound does carry pretty well, and can be heard over the sound of wind in the trees or rushing water if you're walking by a stream.
