Save the money you would spend on a Safari. You probably will see bears/wolves at a distance through a scope like you would on your own. If you stop where the crowds and scopes are, people are mostly very happy to show you what they are looking at. We love sharing our scope with families. The week before you leave come back here and ask for the latest areas where sightings are occurring. Plan to be out early till mid morning looking and also late afternoon to dark. But be alert at all times - wildlife is where it is when it is. You won't see $800 worth more on a guided safari, in my opinion. One thing that helps get the kids out in the morning is not to wait for breakfast - just pile in the car and go. Eat cereal (or cereal bars or breakfast cookies if you don't have a cooler) in the car. There are laundromats at Canyon, Fishing Bridge, and a little one upstairs at Old Faithful Snow Lodge (ask at the desk). My favorite is Canyon because it is huge. Where are you staying? I think the only horse ride cookout would be from Roosevelt - make reservations well before your trip. And one more thing - get yourself a copy of "Yellowstone Treasures" by Janet Chapple. It is a great guide to Yellowstone for first-timers and we are approaching our 30th trip and we take it along too.
